The definitive resource for building your own poker table...
http://www.pcpotato.com/poker/
This guy originally posted step-by-step plans on how to build a simple felt top table. 6 months later he later posted instructions for building a padded rail. And he now has a library of drawings, plans, photographs that have been submitted by other people. It's a great way to check out different styles/ideas. I like the "race track" tables.
You will notice that most of the tables are built on top of a simple folding table (or have folding legs mounted to the table top). This makes storing it very easy. However, if you don't like folding legs, you can see examples of sawhorse or pedestal legs.
Some other websites dedicated to poker table construction:

While my velvet table top has held up well, it stains too easily, and has accumulated a lot of drink rings. It works great, but it looks like shit. I think I may take on another project soon...
