So I am back from New Orleans. Fro text messaged me a couple of times from Vegas and I am anxious to hear the full version of the stories.
I played 6-12 limit holdem for about six hours yesterday in New Orleans and was reminded just how utterly boring and mechanical it is, and, relatively speaking, how easy it is to win money - I got down early and just patiently waited and ground right back up to a decent profit. It wasn't much but it was enough to pay for most of my portion of the trip, so I can't complain.
My favorite line of the weekend (at least the poker part of it) came from the guy sitting next to me who was quite bothered when he made top pair with his A4 offsuit but was outkicked by another player holding AK who had raised him preflop and had position on him. He watched the dealer push the chips to the other player and then turned to me and said sincerely, "Man, I hate kickers. It takes all of the fun out of being dealt a good hand."
I just shook my head and told him "It's always fun to play poker!" But I left out the "with people who call raises out of position with ace-four" part because I didn't want to run him off. Mike Caro would have been so proud of me.
Otherwise the trip was good. That poker room is a madhouse - at 2:30am on Saturday morning all 22 tables were full, the lists for every one of the games were at least 10 deep and even the list for the the $5-5 no limit game had forty-four names on it. I didn't even put my name down, I just went and had another "last" beer and then went to bed. Crazy.
Random thoughts from a lawyer, an accountant, a commodities trader, an ex-Marine and a WSOP Main Event money finisher that don't know as much as they wish they did...
