I booked my 5th winning session in a row last night. It was a small win, but a win nonetheless.
I've been playing lately at two places which both play the same game: $1-$2 Pot Limit. Although I usually prefer the slightly bigger games ($2-$5 Pot Limit, $2-$5 No Limit), the action at these games is plenty juicy. Last night everyone originally bought in for $300, and there were quite a few rebuys. Result: plenty of money at the table.
For the first 2 hours I lost consistently, and couldn't make anything happen. Because I couldn't seem to connect with any flop, I made a conscious decision to try and steal a few pots to offset my losses. While this worked a few times, I did get caught with my hand in the cookie jar on more than one occasion. The result was pure advertising for my future hands. I knew the cards would turn eventually, and when they did, I was well positioned to get plenty of action.
At my worst point, I was down about $275, but knew the game was worth staying for. There were 2 rookie players who were winning pot after pot. To quote Jim McManus: "I saw their stacks as my most plunderable prize."
The night got better, and I won some key pots, and was able to leave in the black.
The owner of the club has graciously offered to host a private tournament for me (providing dealers, drinks, etc.) at some future date. I can decide the rules, blind structures, etc. I'm going to take him up on it, and hope to plan a big tournament (ala Waring Poker Tour II) sometime soon. I'll keep you posted.
