We decided to play at Hollywood over Horseshoe to get into the daily tournament. In addition, the new room at Hollywood is supposedly nicer. I was pleased with the quality of the poker room, but the seats were terribly uncomfortable.
We got there in time for the 11:00 tournament. There were 48 players. Buyin was $60, rebuys for an hour of $20 and a $20 add-on. At noon, I was in for $120 and had a slightly below average stack. Vey little good happened to me. I watched CCM get eliminated and then our third wheel (a mysterious man that sometime goes by "Kip") went all in. I had 55 and the blinds were coming up and would wipe out 1/2 of my stack. Seemed like a good time to go all-in. It was a 3-way pot and the third dude had KK. Ouch. Flop comes with a 5 and I nearly triple up. Kip is sent to the rail where he listened to offensive stories from another player about "nipping". Odd.
Things went well from there and next thing I know, I am at the final table. Blinds are TC2k-4k, my stack is 11k and there are about 200k in chips out there. I double up with JJ and have 20K at the break with 9 players remaining (app an average stack). The blinds then jump to 5k-10k. Whoa. I am in the BB for 10K with only 10K change in front of me. It is obvious that a lot of guys will be knocked out in the next couple minutes. I wake up to AK. UTG goes all in and it folds around to me. I call to make a pot of 45k, or app 25% of the TCs. He has AQ. Cha-ching! Flop comes with a Q. Ru-roh!. I get eliminated and he becomes the chip leader. Payout was
So, I profited $8.40. I tipped the dealer $5 and applied the remainder toward a sandwich.
I then spent the next 6 hours at the $2-$5 NL HE table. There were 3 key hands:
I was dealt KK and made it $25 to go and got 3 callers. Flop comes Qxx. I move all in and get a caller with Q7. He turned a freaking 7 and I have to buy in again.
Then I get AK and call a raise from a very unpredictable player. I think 4 paid to see the flop. Flop comes AQQ. I make a move and go all in. I figure I might be ahead. If not, a guy with trips may fear his kicker or the boat. I get a call from the original raiser that flopped quads. I have to buy in again.
I am slowly building up my (third) stack when I get dealt 67 in the blind. Flop comes 589 rainbow. Nice. I check and the last-to-act bets $30 into a $30 pot. I go for the check raise of only $30 more. Check-raises give off serious strength and I didn't want him to fold. I figured he maybe had A9 or perhaps was on a steal. He was the only caller. Next card is Q, still a rainbow. OK, the strength of my hand is already revealed (maybe he thinks I hit a set of 9's, who knows) and I bet $100. I know that the only hand that beats me is TJ, but it is unlikely that he would have made a pot sized bet on the flop with an open ended straight draw in last position rather than taking the free card. So, when he re-raises for all my chips I am thinking he has a set of Qs or maybe thinks he can scare off the set of 9's that he put me on. I call. He shows the freaking TJ and I am drawing dead on the river.
Man, that was a tough day. In one hand I was the victim of a guy calling $25 preflop with Q7 followed by his all in call with top-pair, 7-kicker. On another hand I just ran into a monster, and on the third hand I lose to a guy that bets the pot on an open ended straight draw. Nay too happy.
I think it was just the poker gods dealing me a little justice for the uncanny rush I have been on lately. Unfortunately, that month-long rush was at $1-$2 and the payback was at $2-$5. The net result of the trip is that I go into the second half of the year as a cumulative loser in 2005 (was up a bit 24 hours ago). Here's to successful July.
