I played in a zero buyin poker tournament last night thrown by some brokers in our market as a "business function". There were 40-something guys playing in a tourney that was supposed to last 3 hours and the blind structure reflected it. This was good, because lately I have been wanting to try and be a little more aggressive in the opening early rounds of tournaments after reading this article and I figured last night was going to be a good opportunity to give it a try - at least it was going to cost me anything. Now, that's what I wanted to do, but it really didn't work out because after 33 minutes of glory I ended up being the 3rd one eliminated in the tournament.
In the two hands that took all of my chips, I made big preflop raises with AQ and AK, respectively, caught an Ace on the flop both times, and then lost each hand when the guys who called the big preflop raises and big flop-bets their Ace-crappy kickers paired their crappy kickers on the turn. Oops.
I would have at least doubled up if not more. But hell, it was free, and they had food and free beer.
